T Level students impress at digital careers fair

Posted: October 5, 2023

We were proud to sponsor this year’s Leeds Digital Careers Fair and attended the event with two groups of T Level students.

Part of Leeds Digital Festival, this event provided a fantastic opportunity for people from the city and beyond to explore locally-available tech careers, courses and training programmes.

Our Digital and IT students were part of the Inspire Pod where they showcased two Pepper Robots, Salt and Pepper, and demonstrated the coding needed to make them move around.

Another group of T Level students impressed attendees with their virtual metaverse of the careers fair, which they created during their placement with Leeds City Council and virtual work experience company, Hundo.

A great showcase for outstanding students

Deputy Head of Digital & Innovation, Rob Whitehead, was a guest speaker at the event where he talked to guests about the college’s extensive range of digital courses.

He said: “It was a pleasure to speak about our courses. Witnessing the keen interest and enthusiastic discussions about future students’ college options was great.

“Our current students’ outstanding performance in the Inspire Pod, demonstrating Pepper Robots, highlighted their remarkable programming and robotics skills acquired through our digital T Level course.

“These robots are just one example of how students explore emerging technologies in our innovation space at Printworks. Another is drone company, COPTRZ, which we recently partnered with to provide our P-TECH students the opportunity to delve into the world of drone technology.”

Praise for ‘life-changing’ potential

Louise Wood, Employment and Skills Senior Manager at Leeds City Council, praised the students for their incredible work.

She said: “Thank you to the college team and students for helping us achieve the event objectives of being inspirational and informative through the stage and pod sessions.”

The students who created the metaverse – a virtual-reality version of the fair – demonstrated it to the council beforehand and received fantastic feedback.

Louise said: “I was absolutely blown away by just how good the final version was and by the way the students presented it.

“This sort of product has the potential to be truly life-changing and the students should be immensely proud of what they have created.

“The students are a credit to the college and they have bright futures ahead of them.”
